CURRICULUM

Design and Technology: The school is embarking on a new and exciting DT curriculum this year. Each year group will undertake 3 different units of work, including cooking. The units will have a focus on designing, planning and making different products. These projects will include: Mechanisms, structures, food, electrical systems, mechanical systems and textiles.

Year Group Autumn Spring Summer
1 Mechanisms– sliders and levers Structures– freestanding structures Food– Preparing fruit and vegetables (including cooking and nutrition requirements for KS1)
2 Food– Preparing fruit and vegetables (including cooking and nutrition requirements for KS1) Mechanisms– wheels and axels Textiles– templates and joining techniques
3 Structures– shell structures (including computer aided design) Food– healthy and varied diet (including cooking and nutrition requirements for KS2) Textiles– 2D shape to 3D product
4 Mechanical Systems– levers and linkages Electrical systems– simple circuits and switches (including programming and control) Food– healthy and varied diet (including cooking and nutrition requirements for KS2)
5 Food– celebrating culture and seasonality (including cooking and nutrition requirements for KS2) Structures– frame structures Electrical systems– more complex switches and circuits (including programming, monitoring and control)
6 Textiles– combining different fabric shapes (including computer aided design) Food– celebrating culture and seasonality (including cooking and nutrition requirements for KS2) Mechanical systems– pulleys or gears.

As the projects are in year 1 and 2, years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6 are similar, adjacent year groups will need to liaise with each other to make sure that they are not repeating what they design. E.G Year 1 and 2 both do Mechanisms- sliders and levers. Year 1 could make a poster and year 2 could make a greetings card.
